What is Zumba and what you need to take a class?

Zumba is a cardiovascular workout that uses a combination of latin music like merengue, salsa, reggaeton, hip-hop, mambo, flamenco, calypso an some belly dancing. The amazing thing about Zumba is that women and men that practice it lose between 500 and 1000 calories while they are having fun.

Zumba was founded in 1990’s by Alberto “Beto” Perez, a Colombian aerobics instructor. He needed to improvise his aerobics class using a couple of cds with latin music because he forgot the aerobic music tape. Zumba classes are now offered in 125 countries, 110000 locations and more than 12 million people take classes around the world.

Zumba is a secure workout and it can be practiced by people of all ages from children to adults. There are eight different classes: Zumba Gold is a program designed for older population. Zumba Toning, a class designed to strength abs, thighs and arms . Aqua Zumba is a Zumba class in a swimming pool. Zumba the circuit. Zumbatomic a special class designed for children from 4 to 12 years old. Zumba Gold Tonning a class designed to strength the muscles in older people. Zumba Zentao is a workout chair that used the body weight to tone the body.

All you need to practice Zumba is a pair of cross-trainer shoes, water, and plenty wish to have fun. In my next post I will provide information about Zumba classes in Las Vegas

  1. I've always wanted to try Zumba, but I feel like it might be a little intimidating. I need to lose about 10-15 lbs and would like to try something new but always feel a little terrified. I joined LA Boxing a couple years ago and loved it, but I always felt out of place, even though it did wonders for my body.

I also have had 4 knee surgeries so there are things that I can't do as well as others can, nor can I dance. So for someone like me, what would you suggest?

    1. Zumba Fitness has different classes and levels. If you want to try this for the first time, I suggest you that take classes for Zumba beginners. My instructor, her name is Mireyda, shows us how to dance each song step by step and she always says: "Try it". I am not a good dancer but Zumba let me feel like Shakira and I love it.

  2. Have you ever tried the P90x exercise program? I’ve seen advertisements about this product. It is a 3 month program of intense exercise. The Exercises change from week to week causing muscle confusion. Tony Horton the fitness guru, say that if you change your workout regularly and do not stay with the same routine, your chances of reaching a perfect body will increase. They do have an eating plan based on your own personal goals. Based on all the examples of people who have been successful using his program it seems like one of the best programs to start. The people that are on the program actually to me already have a head start. They are already in pretty good shape. The people who are in Zumba seem to have that same headstart. You favor Zumba, but do you have any other opinions about exercise programs that are as intense as this one (P90X). How long did it take you to decide that Zumba was the one for you? How does Zumba compare with other popular exercise programs on the market? There are literally thousands.

  3. Ruben, I have never tried the P90x exercise program but I plan on doing it in the future. I decided to take Zumba classes because my primary doctor suggested me to exercise in order to fight against stress, bad mood and fatigue. Zumba is not an extreme exercise program it is rather an entertaining way to keep you body fit. P90X is for people who are already fit and are trying to get to that next level of fitness. It all depends on what you are looking for in a fitness program. If you are already an athlete and you are trying to target specific muscles to gain more strength an endurance then a program like P90X or Insanity would be better, but if you are looking to have a good time while working out then Zumba is a better choice.
